Oral Anti-Diabetic Treatment

I have told before that appropriate and healthy diet and regular exercise are important for treatment of Type 2 Diabetes.

The important here is to understand that diabetes will be with you forever.  Why? Because you may understand better and acknowledge that things required to be done is a life style, not a necessity.  Because, appearance of diabetes complications may be postponed by having certain behaviors for a healthy life.

Healthy nutrition and active life or regular exercise is such important; however, unfortunately it is not enough for the treatment.  Therefore we use drugs for diabetes treatment.  These drugs consist of glucose lowering pills.  We call these “oral antidiabetic drugs”.  In other words, these drugs are effective against diabetes.

Let us emphasize important points that should be remembered:

  • Purpose of treatments for Type 1 Diabetes and Type 2 Diabetes is to provide long terö control of blood glucose.
  • If your blood glucose is consistently high and you can not control it for a long period, complications caused by diabetes such as

Heart diseases and heart failure, stroke and heart attacks due to vascular obstructions, kidney failure due to kidney damage and living dependent to dialysis appear earlier.

  • These complications caused by high blood sugar within long period are in first five causes of deaths worldwide.
  • Main purpose of all treatments is to keep your blood glucose around normal limits consistently and to preserve this condition as long as possible to prevent life threatening problems and diseases of Type 2 Diabetes.
  • Treatment of Type 2 Diabetes actually aims to protect you form these complications or to meet these as late as possible.
  • The most efficient and permanent treatment of Type 2 Diabetes together with obesity (fatness) is possible with metabolic surgery (obesity surgery).  Metabolic surgery may eliminate findings of the disease in patients with Type 2 Diabetes who are eligible and do not have a permanent damage completely and permanently.

After detection of this close relation betweens strict control of blood glucose and complications, we may discuss causes for hyperglycemia (elevation in blood glucose ).  Hyperglycemia appears due to many different causes and patterns.
